Everything Is Awesome - The LEGO Movie Videogame

The LEGO Movie introduced the first full built LEGO world for it's screen debut, and our game had to follow suit. Characters, levels and even the fire and water particles were built from bricks, and the UI's instruction-manual styling packaged it beautifully. I got to take on the design for the brilliant and bizarre motorway chase, which saw one person on a bike, and one person hopping from vehicle rooftop to rooftop. In true action film fashion though, everything that you clung to either crashed or exploded forcing you to save one and others lives throughout this remarkable road trip.

Mechanics Design: Instruction Build
By The Book - Mechanics Design: Instruction Build

The LEGO movie made so many in jokes, so many fourth wall breaking references, that the game needed it's own killer mechanic that would jab right at the experience of building with the real stuff. I pitched the initial concept for Instruction Building. A mechanic that saw you collecting pages of the instruction manual, taking these to a pad, and then leafing through them page by page to build a model piece(ish)-by-piece. This time-based minigame, not only featured in LEGO Movie: The Videogame, but The Hobbit and Ninjago.
